MATESL at Hawaii Pacific University
In Taiwan, the career prospects are outstanding for qualified English teachers. The demand for both Taiwanese and native English speaking teachers is high--teaching English is one of the hottest careers in Taiwan. Demand for English teachers in public schools is expected to grow by up to 10,000 in coming years according to the Taiwan Ministry of Education, and there are many thousands of job opportunities in private schools and cram schools.
The Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language (MA TESL) at HPU educates students from all over the world for an exciting career as a teacher of English.
Graduates of the MA TESL program at HPU are ready to step into a teaching position in any English language classroom--in Taiwan or abroad.
The MA TESL program is 37 semester credits, and can be completed in 18-24 months.
HPU's MA TESL program is designed to be as practically oriented as possible. The program focuses on practical, hands-on education, which teaches graduates the essential skills to become successful educators.
The MA TESL features a solid curriculum with three types of courses. First, linguistic theory courses taught from an applied viewpoint help the MA TESL student better understand languages in general, and English in particular. Second, pedagogy courses present a range of current approaches, designs, and procedures for teaching language in a wide variety of contexts. In these classes, teaching demonstrations and videotaped peer practice sessions are used extensively. Third, six credits of practicum courses allow the future teacher to observe master teachers, serve with them in the classroom as assistants, and assume full class responsibility as practice teachers. Finally, the capstone activity synthesizes several semesters of classroom study and practicum training. Students have three options for this completion requirement: a portfolio, a comprehensive exam, or an extensive in-service project.
